Research Interests:
Dr. McNally’s clinical and academic work benefits priority populations and communities by building interdisciplinary teams and community partnerships that move “oral health” from the margins of health care. In 2008, she became a WHO gold standard calibrated oral health examiner and participated in the Inuit Oral Health Survey (Office of the Chief Dental Officer, Public Health Agency of Canada). This has led to community-based research opportunities including the Labrador Aboriginal Oral Health Survey Nunatsiavut, Labrador; Kungatsiajuk: Supporting the Healthy Smiles of NunatuKavut Children in 7 Inuit Labrador communities; and more recently working with Mi’kmaq communities in Unama’ki (Cape Breton, Nova Scotia) to develop the Tui’kn Pathway to Oral Health.
Her research projects also focus on effective health promotion and integration of oral health care for frail and dependant older adults residing both at home and in continuing care settings. Her research has developed pragmatic daily mouth care resources (Brushingup.ca) and influenced policies and programs to promote better oral care practices in Nova Scotia. Her multidisciplinary teams are interested in gaining a better understanding of the ethical implications of frailty and of personal mouth care. Her research includes careful attention to knowledge translation strategies with the involvement of end-users and decision makers as an integral part of the research process.
