Management of mucogingival defects: Rationale and surgical techniques (morning session)

Presenters: Drs. Kevin MacDonald and Kale Wudrich

Periodontal plastic surgery is performed for both physiologic and esthetic correction of mucogingival defects. These soft tissue defects are frequently encountered in practice, and both the dentist and hygienist play a role in identifying and referring these defects for potential surgical management. The first step in management involves recognizing the etiology and the factors that may predispose the patient to progressive recession or a worsening of the defect. Correction may involve several different surgical approaches, which are selected for their predictable long-term outcomes and their potential to maintain periodontal health.

A practical guide to evidence-based dentistry for improved clinical outcomes

(afternoon session)

Presenters: Drs. Danny Boyd and Richard Price

Making clinical decisions can be tough. Making clinical decisions through an evidence-based dentistry (EBD) lens can be really tough. That’s because evidence is complicated and multi-faceted. It can be biased; it can be nuanced. Sometimes good evidence appears weak, and weak evidence appears strong. This course will review the principles of evidence-based dentistry and offer practical advice on how to access and use this information in everyday practice. The first part of the course will focus on the principles of EBD, a classification system for evidence, and will challenge some common-sense perspectives in dentistry through the EBD lens. The second part of the course will focus on EBD as it relates to the curing of dental composite materials in a clinical setting and will teach participants what the current evidence suggests and how to integrate state-of-the-art science into clinical practice.

  • Diagnostic considerations for treatment and referral-oriented management
  • Surgical approaches and the rationale for managing soft-tissue defects
  • Different approaches to maintenance and the impact of mucogingival defects on periodontal health status
  • Dentistry tips, tricks, and things you may not know!
  • A practical guide to evidence-based dentistry for improved clinical outcomes (afternoon session)
  • At the end of this course, participants will know more about:
  • The principles of evidence-based dentistry
  • How to interpret and use a hierarchy of evidence based on ADA clinical evidence classifications
  • How to access, identify, and use high quality evidence to support their clinical practice and deliver optimum patient outcomes
